Black Philanthropy Month Spotlight: Dorothy P. Wilson

For Dorothy P. Wilson, publisher and CEO, Gulf Coast Woman and GCW Media 360, some of the earliest lessons in generosity came from watching neighbors quietly take care of one another.

Growing up in a small rural Georgia town in the 1960s, she saw a kind of giving that didn’t need recognition or even a thank you. You simply shared what you had.

“I watched as neighbor supported neighbor. If one had a new harvest of corn, he would drop off a bushel on our porch – no need to stop to receive a thank you. When my Daddy’s watermelons were ready, everyone in the neighborhood knew it. Out of the abundance of their heart, we all seemed to have enough.”

Those early experiences helped shape the way Dorothy thinks about philanthropy today.

“Philanthropy is much more than giving money – it is maximizing everything God has placed in my hands. It means giving my time, influence, experience, resources, and access to create opportunities for people who might otherwise be overlooked or not have enough.”

That belief is one reason the GivHer Circle resonates so strongly with her.

“I really appreciate the GivHer Circle because it’s women coming together to contribute what may seem like a small amount to make a BIG impact in the community.”

It’s a model of philanthropy that reflects something Dorothy learned long ago: one person’s contribution doesn’t have to be enormous to matter. When people give together, what may seem small can become something much greater.

“Everyone can be a philanthropist. Don’t look at the amount. What matters is the heart behind what you give. A little given by many can add up to a lot.”

For Dorothy, philanthropy comes back to abundance – not necessarily an abundance of money, but an abundance of heart, experience, influence, access, and a willingness to share what we have.

Those simple acts of neighbors sharing what they had shaped a lesson in generosity that Dorothy still carries with her today.

This story is part of Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s celebration of Black Philanthropy Month. Throughout August, we’re highlighting Black donors, fundholders, and community members whose generosity, leadership, and service are helping strengthen South Mississippi.
