About Gulf Coast comunity Foundation

Message from the Chairman

Dear Friends,

As we strive to meet the needs of the Community as a result of Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation faces new challenges, requiring innovative approaches and solutions.  No longer can the Foundation be content with the traditional role of raising and distributing funds for worthy causes.  Over the past several years, the leadership of the Foundation set before us a “call to action” to take a greater role in clarifying and addressing community needs.  The Foundation has worked diligently to expand its role as a community funder and is emerging as a community leader.

The Foundation continues to be the leader in administering Katrina recovery funds.  The Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Funds, totaling $32 million, assisted in funding over 80 projects and rebuilding over 600 homes damaged by Katrina.  The Coming Home Collaborative provides funding for the reconstruction of homes damaged by either wind or water during Katrina.  The goal of the Coming Home Collaborative is to complete 175 homes by November 30, 2011.

While housing continues to be a priority, the Foundation is challenged to take the lead in assessing the needs of the Community and developing programs to meet those needs.  Strengthening long time partnerships with national organizations like the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and local non-profit organizations, has helped make the Foundation stronger and better able to address changes within our community.  The Foundation continues to look for ways to improve the quality of life for citizens living on the Gulf Coast, but we need your help.  Please take some time to explore our website and determine how you or your organization can participate in the continued revitalization of our Community.  We welcome your assistance.
